I will not allow this bridge to open
The promise
Trump threatened in a written post to stop the Gordie Howe International Bridge from opening between Detroit and Windsor. He demanded compensation for what he said the United States had given Canada and suggested that America should own at least half the asset. He connected the threat to wider disputes over Canadian trade policies and commercial ties with China. The supporting argument was that a major border crossing should provide reciprocal benefits and shared American influence. Critics noted that Canada had financed the project and questioned using its opening as leverage in unrelated trade disagreements. The post announced a conditional threat and did not establish that an enforceable closure order had already been issued.
