Canada lives because of the United States.
The promise
At Davos, Trump said Canada's existence depended on the United States and directed a warning at Prime Minister Mark Carney. The comment followed Carney's speech about a changing international order and the need for countries to resist coercion. Trump framed American defense and economic power as benefits for which Canada should show greater gratitude. The supporting argument was that Canadian security and trade are closely connected to the United States. The objection was that this dependence did not erase Canada's sovereignty or justify demands for political deference. The remark was a diplomatic rebuke rather than a new formal proposal to make Canada a state.
