“Starting on day one, we will end inflation and make America affordable again.”
The promise
A central campaign promise was that inflation would be ended “starting on day one,” and prices on all goods would start falling. The promise envisioned use of executive actions, tariff policies, regulatory trimming, and fiscal discipline to immediately reverse inflation trends. However, inflation is driven by macroeconomic factors, monetary policy, global supply chains, and demand–supply imbalances—forces beyond immediate executive control. As of 2025, inflation remains persistent, price pressures are still present, and no dramatic day-one reversal occurred. Economists debate whether any president could instantly “end inflation.” This promise is broadly considered broken.
