The promise
Trump threatened to withdraw American certification from Canadian aircraft and impose a 50 percent tariff on aircraft sold into the United States. He claimed Canada had improperly withheld certification from several Gulfstream business-jet models. His post tied relief from the threat to Canadian approval of the American aircraft. The supporting argument was that reciprocal access should protect American manufacturers from discriminatory treatment. The objection was that treating aircraft approval as trade leverage could confuse safety decisions with commercial retaliation and disrupt an integrated industry. The statement did not itself establish that all Canadian aircraft had lost their operational approvals.
