I will institute the INSURRECTION ACT
The promise
Trump threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act in Minnesota if state leaders did not stop what he described as attacks on immigration officers. His post followed protests and confrontations during a large federal immigration-enforcement operation in the Minneapolis area. Invoking the act could enable military involvement in domestic law enforcement under specified conditions. The supporting argument was that extraordinary federal intervention might be needed to protect officers and restore order. Critics disputed the characterization of the protests and warned against military intervention over local officials' objections. The statement was a conditional threat rather than evidence that the act had already been invoked.
