"We could take them away."
The promise
In October 2025, Donald Trump threatened to revoke the 2026 FIFA World Cup matches scheduled in the Boston area (specifically Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts) citing concerns over public safety and criticizing the city’s mayor. He suggested he could appeal to FIFA President Gianni Infantino and “take them away” if conditions are not met. However the decision of match venues lies with FIFA, and host cities were finalized years earlier (2022). As such this remains a rhetorical threat rather than a concrete executed promise. The comment fits his broader pattern of using sports hosting leverage for political pressure. No official removal has yet occurred, and Boston remains scheduled as of 2025.
