I won't use force.
The promise
In his Davos address, Trump explicitly said he would not use force to obtain Greenland. He continued to argue that the United States needed ownership of the territory for security. The assurance came during a dispute involving Denmark, NATO allies, and threatened trade penalties. Supporters could regard it as clarifying that his acquisition campaign would proceed through negotiation rather than military intervention. Critics argued that economic coercion and territorial demands could still destabilize relations even without an invasion. The statement was a new limitation on his proposed approach and did not amount to abandoning the older acquisition goal.
