“I want him to do a great job, and we’ll help him do a great job.”
The promise
On November 21, 2025, Trump met with New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani in the Oval Office. The meeting was notable because Trump and Mamdani had previously exchanged harsh criticism. After the meeting, Trump struck a surprisingly cordial tone and said he wanted Mamdani to do a great job. He also said the federal government would help him do a great job. This was not a conventional campaign promise, but it was a public commitment to cooperate with a political opponent on New York City affordability and safety. The statement can be tracked because federal-city cooperation can affect housing, policing, infrastructure, immigration enforcement, and transportation funding. At the same time, it is difficult to measure because “help him do a great job” is subjective and does not include a concrete deliverable. The promise should therefore remain in work unless Trump later blocks support, withdraws cooperation, or Mamdani publicly says the administration refused meaningful help. For now, it is a soft commitment rather than a fulfilled promise.
